Md. Mahfuzur Rahman Farhad, Itna (Kishoreganj) Correspondent:
Just one kilometer west of the market in Itna Upazila of Kishoreganj, in the quiet and picturesque village of Barahati, stands a mysterious ancient structure, the Ghaybi Mosque with three domes. Locally, some call it the historical Shahi Mosque, while others call it the Big Mosque. However, it is most commonly known as the ‘Ghaybi Mosque.’
Maulana Azizul Haque Mir Sahib, the khatib of the mosque, said,
There is nothing to say Ghaybi, only Allah is the Knower of the Unseen. However, no reliable information or inscription has been found about who or what built this mosque. It is because of that mystery that it is popularly called the ‘Ghaybi Mosque.’
Amazing Features
One of the wonders of this mosque is its ability to control temperature. On hot days, you can find a cool breeze, and in winter, the inside becomes surprisingly warm. Such natural features in a century-old architecture are still a matter of curiosity for scientists.
History and Heritage of the Mosque
Although the name of the mosque builder and the exact construction date are not known from talking to the locals, historians believe that Delwar, a member of Isha Khan’s council, built this mosque about 425 years ago. Although it has partially deteriorated due to the effects of time, visitors are still fascinated by its architectural style.
Crowds of devotees and tourists in the mosque
Every day, the mosque premises are crowded with local devotees and tourists from different parts of the country. Some come to offer prayers, some come to see the historical structures, and many distribute Tabarak and Shinni to please Allah.
This hidden mosque in Barahati village of Itna is not just a place of worship — it is a living symbol of Kishoreganj’s past traditions and beliefs.
